Artist Statement

I like to think of the early stages as a type of play using intuition as a guiding force with no predetermined end. When I begin to draw I have no fixed formula in mind and rely on the memory or presence of a form. I create stream of consciousness drawings which provide me with forms that appear familiar but retain a strong sense of ambiguity. Once constructed the process of placement is of great importance. These forms rarely stand alone but are parts to a greater whole. These sculptures feed off one another complimenting and contrasting creating tension. It’s an exiting part of the process seeing different relationships emerge. As an artist it is important to me to free myself from direct representation and allow for subtleties to evoke memories and associations in the eyes of the viewer.

The uses of clay, adobe and plaster have been my primary source of construction materials. I have had great success incorporating earthen textures and surfaces as well as organic forms. I enjoy working with these materials because of the direct contact between skin and object.
